These are not decals on tiles;
the full color print is permanently embedded below the surface of
the tile. First, high-quality artwork is digitally printed with a special UV resistant ink-set. With the application of extreme heat and pressure, the ink is changed directly from a solid into a gas in a process known in chemistry as sublimation. The gas then permeates the special glaze of the tile, and when the heat and pressure is removed, the ink again becomes solid, now permanently embedded below the surface glaze.
Full color ceramic tiles where the image is embedded below the surface are suitable for wall or backsplash
installation. Full color tempered glass tiles, where the image is embedded in the surface coating of the underside of the tile are suitable for floor
and countertop installation. The entire thickness glass protects
the tile. 12" glass tiles are tempered for strength, 6" glass tiles don't need to be tempered. Glass tiles come with a texturing to prevent slipperiness
and meet or exceed ASTM tests set forth by ANSI standards for commercial
and residential floor and wall applications.
Once we've discussed
your project via email or over the phone and you accept the
quote, we begin the approval process. We send you a digital preview
showing how your artwork would look in the area you want to have
a mural, and where the image would fall across the tiles. Then we
produce a single tile as a color proof for you to approve. Barring
any color adjustments, we then produce your entire tile mural.
This process normally takes less
than two weeks from beginning to having the tiles in your hands.
Please note that we do not install
tile murals; you must install them yourself or we recommend hiring
a local professional. They install like ordinary ceramic or glass tiles, although glass tiles specifically should be installed using only epoxy mortars such as 100% Solids Epoxy Mortar by Custom Building Products, Mercrete Merpoxy 400 or 420, or Laticrete Latapoxy 300.
